Strength

Roots+Wings is my first solo exhibit, held at the Margaret Hennigar Public Library during the month of February 2018. Each image was paired with verse to represent emotions ranging from devastation through rejuvenation.

Strength, from the Roots and Wings Series by Sara Harley
Strength
My roots will ground me
as I reach for my dreams.
With each new season,
I will blossom and grow.
When ill winds blow,
I will bend but not break.
I will nurture and protect
those who take shelter with me.

I wrote this verse during the months between surgery for breast cancer and commencing radiation treatments.

I needed something to give myself motivation to carry on.

It remains one of my favourite inspirational writings to this day.

Does these trees look familiar? (yes, there are 2 trees in this image). I used also used this image as the basis for "Strength" in my Stroke of Emotions project.

About Roots + Wings:

I believe trees represent growth and strength, with roots to ground us in our traditions. I see birds in flight as symbols of freedom, with the power of dreams and life renewed. Together, Roots + Wings create powerful images of inspiration and tools to heal the soul. These images are a symbolic representation of emotional healing, from devastation through rejuvenation.

It takes courage to take a leap of faith.

When it's the right time for you, you need to take charge of the rest of your life.

Spread your wings....take flight...start living.

Artist Talk

The Picturing Health exhibit at the Viewpoint Gallery is a group exhibit with photographs by 10 photographers. I have five images displayed at this exhibit, the maximum accepted by the jury. I am very proud of this achievement, and it's the first time that I have been paid to show my work!

Today was the artists' talk, with only four of us attending. I'm always nervous talking in front of a crowd, but it's relatively easy to talk about your own work.

Here are some photos from the afternoon.

hanging the Roots+Wings exhibit

One of the challenges in having a solo exhibit is that there is no one to help you unless you recruit some friends. I asked one of the librarians to take my photo as I was trying to hang some of my images. The most difficult part was trying to get them all even....something that was important to me. I had made the decision to have all square images, with the exception of the image in the lobby...that one is a large print...approx 18x36 inches, plus matting and frame.

I was very happy with the final result...not bad for a first time!
